Continuity, consistency!
“I can’t imagine us doing homework any other way now.”
Jo Puddy Wells, Principal
The British School of Bucharest, Romania
The British School of Bucharest, like so many schools and especially international schools, lives with constant change. As parents move on or are posted elsewhere, the pupil turnover is high. Staff also tend to move more than in the UK.
The result, says Jo Puddy-Wells, Principal, is that consistency is sometimes lacking. And this was particularly true in the case of the homework for their primary school.
“Our teachers are drawn from all over the world and each one had their own approach to homework.” The homework relied heavily on the photocopier and was, inevitably, very “hit and miss”.
Jo was looking for a solution when she encountered Workabooks on a trip back to the UK. She showed them to her staff who welcomed the chance to simplify homework setting and marking.
Parents were similarly impressed, “As middle class, high achievers, they are always keen on homework and are ready to participate.” Workabooks have turned out to be the perfect way to involve them in a steady, consistent way through the year.
The colourful and inviting design of Workabooks has also been important. “For children – and parents - with English as their second language, Workabooks are appealing and accessible; a distinct improvement on scrappy black and white photocopied sheets”.
Teachers have also found that homework is handed in much more punctually; children quickly get used to the routine of getting and completing homework and take great pride in their literacy and maths Workabooks.
Jo says that Workabooks have had a huge impact, not only eliminating the hassle of setting homework but also establishing a consistent, high standard. She would be happy to discuss her experiences with Workabooks. You can contact her at the British School of Bucharest, http://www.britishschool.ro
