Your child should try to do their homework without your help, but you can offer support and assistance whenever they need it.

Providing the right setting for homework is an important part of supporting your child.

Here are some suggestions:
  • Try to develop a routine, finding a regular time for homework when your child is not too tired and you are able to give support if needed.

  • Make sure they are sitting at a table, in a reasonably quiet place.

  • Encourage others not to distract your child during homework!

  • Make sure they aren’t tired, hungry, thirsty, cold or irritated. These all get in the way of concentration and learning.

When the homework is completed, your child can sign the homework to show it has been done and can comment on how easy or difficult it was to do.

You can also sign the Parent/Carer comment box, and tick one of the boxes:

With Help -
if your child needed help to do the homework

Alone -
if your child worked alone

Confidently -
if your child worked alone and did the work confidently

This will build into a record of your child’s progress. Praise and encourage!

As a parent or carer, you have tremendous power to strengthen your child’s confidence – and confidence is vital to learning. Always be generous with support, praise and encouragement!

Always encourage your child to take a real pride in their work!
